Dear (Blogger) Diary,

It's New Year's eve! I've not utilized you like I expected since joining after the demise of Spark People. I still may not but for now, here goes.

I was struck today by a comment on 'This Old House'. The Victorian house was painted a multitude of colors; blue tone on another blue for the main surfaces, a white trim, and with a reddish-brown paint accent on the stain glassed door and on the little do-dads on the trim. A gentleman said they cut back on the colors because driving by at 25 mph, you can't see them all.

Just like my sandwich.

It had a roll, roast beef and swiss cheese. Lettuce. Onion. Tomato. Oregano. Salt. Pepper. Mayo. Hot sauce. Pickle juice. Ketchup. (homemade pseudo-thousand island dressing)

What did I taste? Bread, hot sauce, oregano, onion.

What was the purpose of this sandwich? To nourish my body and, sort of, my soul. I'm not sure it did that. My sandwich was about 550 calories, 46 carbs and 30 grams of fat.

I could have had a salad with all the above and no bread. 30 g of carbs would have been gone along with 2 of fat.

I could have replaced the dressing with a balsamic vinegar or other low fat dressing. That would have removed 4 g of carbs and 11 of fat.

This salad would be about 318 calories, 12g carbs and 17g fat. More fiber with more vegetables. I still would have had the roast beef and swiss cheese and I could pick out a piece of each and taste them.

I would have saved myself from those calories, that fat.

I couldn't see the meat and cheese through all those additions.

  1. Hmmmm, it's got you thinking! You could put it to the science experiment test and next time do it as a salad and see if your hypothesis is correct!

Oh, I got some Piedmontese "Tuscan Rosemary Seasoning" for Christmas, and tried it out on this morning's omelet--Yum! See, we know these things, it's just a matter of slowing down to see / feel / taste them!

  2. A salad with those basic ingredients would be delicious! Step one . . . you are aware! Now to experiment (as Barb said!)

  3. I understand completely - but with this cold temps, a crisp, crunchy, COLD salad just doesn't sound appealing...

  4. Yep, it's me. I always mean to say, "I'll have a burger with no bun." But sometimes that doesn't come out of my mouth. I do eat salads now but too much there is too much in them. I am cutting back on ingredients. Slowly.
